You may not be familiar with the term “newsjacking,” but it’s an effective marketing strategy to gain exposure to your potential prospects, and even get some new business.
This actually happened to Kelly Monaghan who wrote a column about host agencies, and the truth they don’t tell you about. A couple of days later, Jackie Friedman of Nexion wrote a rebuttal column explaining the benefits of working with her host agency.
This is newsjacking.
It’s basically finding a popular story that you either agree or disagree with (although disagreements tend to be better) and writing your opinion about the topic.
An example Kelly gives from the general news is when President Obama said that no one uses travel agents anymore. This would be a perfect opportunity for travel agents to newsjack the article and write up a piece about how valuable travel agents are, and how they are alive and well.
Now if you take that article and promote it through social medial channels so that journalists can read it, then you have the possibility of having an interview or a story written about your agency in the local newspaper.
